I Remote-Controlled My Dog

My dog is spoiled. She’s loved and she knows it, and I think she feels like she can get away with just about anything. That’s not to say that she isn’t disciplined, because she’s a very good dog, but she knows what she can get away with. She has her own doggy bed that she usually sleeps on, but lately I’ve been coming home to see her curled up on the white antique couch from my Grandmother, groggy, barely raising her head to acknowledge my entrance. I realized this preference earlier on from watching her on my webcam, but thought there was nothing I could do about it from work. Then I reflected on my ability to connect to my home computer and screen share via VNC and the recording app Blue FiRe on my iPhone with it’s ability to FTP files. So, with Blue FiRe I recorded myself saying “Get Down!”, used the program to FTP the recording to my site, VNC’d to my home computer where I loaded up the FTP client, downloaded the audio file, played it back at full volume, and watched my dog’s reaction. At first, nothing. I played it again. Her head rose up with a groggy look on her face, but she stayed in place. Again. She jumped off of the couch with her tail between her legs and went over to her bed. It worked! I remote-controlled my dog. It will probably be less of a hassle to just throw one of our barstools on the couch so she doesn’t even have the option, but you have to admit, this is a lot more fun.

I saw this shot of Flint Hills Resources’ Texas Refining Complex from the highway. We pulled on to the nearest frontage road, but there were too many obstacles and no safe pullovers. I was close to giving up when, thankfully, Jess persisted and found us a location that was similar to the original perspective.

Berlin – Blink Of An Eye (DvS Remix)

Man, it’s been a while since I worked on music. I’ve had an original song cooking for months, but wasn’t entirely happy with the vocals so I shelved it and decided to work on remixing someone else’s music. This turned into an electronic dance tune with a little retro and industrial weirdness thrown in. Using GarageBand, I started with loops I wanted to use from the Berlin song, laid down the main beat and then started the arrangement. I came up with a synth line, chopped up the vocals and added the robotic effect to the main vocal line (inspired by Fever Ray and Underworld) and a nice delay for the verses. I then added more percussion, finalized the arrangement, and added the final synth melody to the end of the song. I don’t have proper mastering tools, but I EQ’d, compressed, and leveled out the mix the best I could. Click on the image to listen and download.

How To Make An iPhone Ringtone Using iTunes (Mac)

Locate a DRM-free song you want in iTunes and take note of the start and stop time of the section you want to use for the ringtone. It can be up to 30 seconds in length.

Right click the song and choose “Get Info” and click on the “Options” tab. Enter the start and stop time values in the appropriate section. Click OK.

Go up to “iTunes/Preferences…” and under “General/Import Settings…” choose “AAC Encoder” Click OK. Click OK again.

Go back to your song, right click and choose “Create AAC Version”. After it’s done converting your song, right click the newly created AAC file and choose “Show in Finder”. Change the .m4a extension of this file to .m4r. Keep this window open.

Go back to the original song in iTunes and zero out the start and stop times you set earlier so your song will play in it’s entirety again. Delete the AAC file you encoded from the library. Choose “Keep File” when the dialog window appears.

Go back to the window that has your .m4r file and drag it into iTunes under the Ringtones section of your iPhone. You’ll see your iPhone light up and sync. Once complete, on your iPhone go to Settings/Sounds and change your ringtone to the one you just created. Isn’t that lovely?

Because it will be one of the best musical performances you’ll ever see. Special guest appearance by Eric Johnson. Steve Vai has been known to materialize as well.
